OAH Program Specialist

Primary Purpose of Position:  

To provide program support and coordinate for NC YOUTH CONNECTED (NCYC), a project aimed at reducing teen pregnancy rates in Cumberland and Wayne Counties by 50% by 2020. The strategies are focused on implementing and sustaining evidence-based programs in a variety of settings, strengthening linkages to adolescent-friendly health care, and on building community support for effective teen pregnancy prevention.  The project aims to equip selected communities with the leadership, knowledge, and skills to collectively impact teen pregnancy and teen birth rates by scaling up evidence-based programs and practices to reach critical numbers of young people with repeated exposures to prevention messages and connecting them with quality clinic services and the most effective methods of contraception.  The Program Specialist will coordinate technical assistance and training on implementing evidence-based programs with fidelity. The Specialist will work closely with the project team to facilitate mutually reinforcing strategies (education and linking networks), assist with monitoring and evaluation, and manage assigned day-to-day operations according to project requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with project manager, project evaluator, and project staff to ensure effective implementation of project
  • Maintain established relationships with school administrators and community agencies
  • Assist/support school and community leaders in prioritizing this effort and integrating into their respective settings
  • Plan and monitor tasks to ensure completion of project deliverables
  • Communicate and coordinate with the rest of project staff and with project partners to keep the work plan on pace
  • Coordinate, organize, execute trainings on evidence-based programs and related skills as needed by partners
  • Develop and deliver short trainings and presentations that strengthen the skills of local health educators
  • Coordinate quarterly technical assistance meetings with all local health educators to provide opportunities to address issues, concerns and create a community of practice
  • Maintain technical assistance progress logs and improvement plans
  • Train (as part of a training cadre) on select topics
  • Observe program implementation as needed for quality improvement purposes
  • Assist with program evaluation
  • Assist with interim and end-of-year reporting to OAH
  • Contribute to and serve on SHIFT NC’s internal working groups as needed

Experience, Knowledge and Skills:

  • MPH, MSW, or M.Ed preferred or equivalent work experience
  • Experience working with diverse community members and groups
  • Experience working with school systems, a plus
  • Experience implementing evidence-based curricula in school or community settings
  • Strong presentation and training skills
  • Experience providing technical assistance
  • Understanding of best practices in teen pregnancy prevention
  • Proven problem-solving skills and ability to be creative in overcoming obstacles
  • Experience developing work plans with partners and monitoring for completion
  • Ability to communicate effectively with different audiences
  • Ability to work well as part of a team
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to travel up to 50% time to project counties
