Since our earliest days, our organization has not taken a specific stance on abortion. We recognize that abortion, adoption, and parenting are all legal options for young people in the United States. (Board of Directors, 1986)
We recognize that abortion is one of the most controversial topics in sexual and reproductive health, and one that too often dominates the conversation. All abortions have one thing in common: a pregnancy. By implementing effective strategies to help prevent unplanned pregnancies, we can reduce all the outcomes of pregnancy, including abortion, fetal death and miscarriage, and birth.
Research shows this strategy is successful. As North Carolina’s teen pregnancy rate has dropped to historic lows, the number of abortions has declined with even greater magnitude. More specifically, the abortion rate among teenagers has dropped 70% in the past two decades.
No matter what you or your organization believes regarding abortion, implementing effective strategies to reduce unplanned pregnancy is a wise solution and a place to find common ground.
